Types of Grants

Investigator-initiated grants

Following one of our requests for proposals, which typically happen in the Fall, investigators can submit a grant to our scientific advisory board for review. The review cycle take approximately one to two months after the submission period has closed, depending on the number of proposals received. These grants are open to academic and industry laboratories, principal investigators, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students. For details on the submission process see Apply for a Grant.

Flex Grants

Friends of FSH Research occasionally awards Flex Fund grants. These are typically, but not always, small grants to fund a specific FSH research need. When possible we try to fold these into the normal grant funding process listed above, but sometimes stuff happens and funding is necessary outside that schedule. In the past, Flex Fund grants have been made to finance the purchase of a specific piece of equipment, attendance at a research conference, and the hiring of a consultant. Flex Fund grants may be applied for at any time. We endeavor to decide on Flex Fund grant applications quickly, and so depending on the proposal, it may not go through the longer RFP process.

If you wish to apply for a Flex Fund grant, please submit your request via e-mail to Terry Colella. Please state with specificity the amount of your request, how the funds will be used, and how the expenditure will support research into a cure for FSHD. Additional materials will be requested as needed. Successful applicants will be expected to report on results achieved in a manner determined by Friends of FSH Research.

FSHD Research Scholar

The FSHD Scholar program is to provide funding to enable promising investigators to extend their research training and/or begin careers as independent FSHD researchers. This program is intended to facilitate innovative research opportunities and supports basic, as well as translational and/or clinical investigators provided the research is relevant to our understanding and possible treatment of Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy.

The grant can be up to two years. The grant can cover a specific project, or a series of projects. The proposal format and periodic reporting requirements are the same as investigator-initiated grants. For further details see FSHD Research Scholar.
