Assistant Professor
Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore
Dr. Lorena Di Pietro is a biologist with a Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome. Since 2012, her research has explored the biological mechanisms underlying neuromuscular and skeletal disorders.
In recent years, her work has focused on FSHD, with the goal of better understanding how and why muscle degeneration occurs. Her research has contributed to clarifying the role of fibro-adipogenic progenitors (FAPs) in disease pathogenesis. Using advanced approaches such as single-cell and multi-omics analyses, she is studying how different cell types interact within muscle tissue and how these interactions influence tissue homeostasis, with a particular focus on identifying protective mechanisms that counteract muscle degeneration in specific muscles of FSHD patients and may lead to new therapeutic strategies.
